Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to common questions about special terminal leave eligibility, application process, and benefits.

Service members are eligible for terminal leave when separating from active duty, retiring, or transitioning between duty assignments. You must have accrued leave time available and receive approval from your commanding officer. Terminal leave allows you to use up to 60 days of saved leave while maintaining full pay and benefits during your transition period.

When your terminal leave period ends, your active duty status officially terminates, and you transition to civilian status or your next assignment. You'll receive final pay, separation documents, and any applicable separation benefits. It's important to coordinate with your unit's personnel office to ensure all administrative requirements are completed before your leave begins.

To apply for terminal leave, submit DA Form 31 (Request and Authority for Leave) to your immediate supervisor at least 30 days before your intended leave start date. Include your separation date, requested leave dates, and current leave balance. Your chain of command will review and approve based on mission requirements and your leave eligibility.

Tip: Start the application process early to ensure proper coordination and approval.
